An introduction to Jagannathpur

Yesterday’s Jagannathpur State is today’s Jagannathpur Upozila under Sunamgonj district in Bangladesh. The history of Jagannathpur dates back to the 12th Century. It was named after the 12th Century King Jagannath Misro Singh of the Perua State.

Jagannathpur was formerly known as Pandura or Perua which was the sub-capital of the sate of Laur. At a later stage, Perua was given independence as a separate state and became known as Jagannathpur, with the capital renamed as Perua. Following the demise of King Jagannath, his son Romanath Singh assumed the throne. During his rule Hazrat Shahjalal conquered the Gura styate and eight of his companions came to Jagannathpur and started preaching Islam.

Over the years Jagannathpur has given birth to scores of scholars and other gifted sons who dedicated their lives for the welfare of their fellow human beings. The famous saints and companions of Hazrat Shahjalal, Hazrat Shah Kamal and Sayed Shamsuddin of Sayedpur came along with six other companions of Hazrat Shajalal during the reign of Ramanth Singh in the 12th Century. Bojendro Nrayan Chowdhury was a well respected politician, journalist and author from the late 18th Century. P C Goswami, a pioneer of modern education in Sylhet area, founded the Modon Muhan College and served as its first Principal. Both these distinctive scholars hailed from Jagannathpur.

In recent times, one of the proud sons of Jagannathpur, Anwar Chowdhury, has brought honour to us all, being the first Bangladeshi born British High Commissioner in Dhaka. The former foreign minister of Bangladesh, Alhaj Abdus Samad Azad, also hails from Jagannathpur Upozilla.

A separate Thana was established at Jagannathpur in 1992 by a gazette notification on 1st October in the same year. This was upgraded first as an Upozilla in March 1983, and then as a Pauorosova (municipality) on the 29th of September 1999.

This website is the brainchild of Mr Abdul Karim Goni a man of Jagannathpur. We hope this website will help to introduce Jagannathpur to the people across the world.
